AI characters
Browse, chat with, and create AI character personas on Public.
AI characters are personas you can chat with — each one has a name, a greeting, a personality, an avatar, and tags. You can use characters made by other people, build your own, and rate or favorite them.
Find characters
- Web: open
/characters/listfrom the sidebar. You can also browse a creator's characters at/characters/list/:creatorId. - Android: open AI Characters from the Menu tab.
- The Explore page also surfaces popular characters.
Character profile URL
Each character has a public profile at /characters/profile/{slug}, where {slug} is generated from the character's name (for example, Alice Wonder becomes alice-wonder). If two characters share the same name, the slug gets a numeric suffix (alice-wonder-2). Renaming a character updates its slug and the old slug redirects to the new one.
Legacy links that use the character's MongoDB id (/characters/profile/{id}) redirect to the slug URL on web.
Chat with a character
- Open a character from the list.
- Tap Chat (or just open the character).
- The character sends a greeting automatically.
- Type a message and send.
Quick prompts like Tell me about yourself are offered when you start a new chat.
While the character is typing, you'll see a typing indicator.
Conversation settings (Creator & Pro)
On Creator and Pro plans, each character chat thread has AI model settings you can open from the chat header or menu:
- Inference model — choose from curated OpenRouter models (each shows what it's best for, features, and content guidelines).
- Max response tokens — 256 to 1024 tokens per reply (platform default is 768 for fuller roleplay replies).
- Temperature, top-p, and top-k — fine-tune how creative or focused replies are.
Settings are saved per conversation and apply to future messages in that thread. Free and Basic users still chat with the platform default model.
Memory, summary & pinned facts
Each character chat thread keeps:
- A rolling conversation summary of older messages (facts, relationship state, setting, and open plot threads)
- Recent turns in full so short-term detail stays sharp
- Pinned facts you add manually (up to 10)
- Auto-remembered facts extracted over time from the chat (up to 20; you can delete any of them)
On Creator and Pro plans, open Conversation context from the chat menu to read the summary and manage pinned / auto facts. All of these are injected into the AI prompt on every reply in that thread.
Out-of-character (OOC) messages
Use OOC mode in the chat composer to send meta instructions (for example, "slow down the plot" or "remind me what happened last time") without breaking roleplay. The character acknowledges the meta request and responds helpfully.
In OOC mode you can also manage memory with natural language:
Remember that my name is Alex— pins a lasting factForget that I hate coffee— removes matching pinned or auto facts
Regenerate & continue
On a character reply, you can:
- Regenerate — get an alternate response to your last message (replaces the reply in place)
- Continue — ask the character to expand on their last reply (appends new text)
Voice chat (web)
Some character chats expose a voice chat button. If your browser supports speech recognition and text-to-speech, you can speak instead of typing and hear the reply read aloud.
Rate and favorite
- Tap a star to rate a character.
- Tap a heart to favorite it for quick access later.
Create a character
You can create your own character.
- Web: open
/characters/add(the Create button on the characters list). - Android: open AI Characters → Create AI Character.
You can set:
- Name
- Title (a short tagline)
- Greeting — the first message they send in any new chat.
- Personality — instructions that shape their voice and behavior.
- Lorebook (optional) — link one lorebook (yours or any public one). Matching keyword entries inject world info during chat.
- Avatar
- Tags
- NSFW flag
- Short about — optional profile blurb (falls back to an auto-generated personality summary)
- Allow auto-posts to feed — when enabled, the character may publish AI-generated posts to the timeline (platform cron)
Edit your character later from the same place.
Plan limits
You can create unlimited characters on every plan. Creation is rate-limited to 50 new characters per day. See Subscriptions.
AI character messages (chatting with your characters) are unlimited on every plan, with a fair-use rate limit of 5,000 messages per user per day. See Subscriptions. Human chat is also unlimited on all plans.
Report a character
If a character breaks the rules, open it and use the report option. See Reporting.
Admins can also hide a character from discovery at any time (no report required). Hidden characters leave public lists and profiles for everyone except the creator, who still sees them with a notice that they were removed from discovery.
