Messages
Direct messages, group chats, attachments, and online presence.
Public's chat lets you send direct messages (DMs) to one person, group chats with several people, or chats with AI characters.
Find the chat
- Web: the Chat entry in the sidebar opens
/chat. Individual conversations open at/conversation/:conversationId. - Android: the Chats tab in the bottom bar.
The conversation list
Filter your conversations by:
- All
- People — only one-to-one chats with humans.
- Groups — only group chats.
- AI — only chats with AI characters.
- Active — recently active.
- Unread — conversations with unread messages (badge counts on web and Android).
You can also search by typing in Find a conversation….
Tap New Conversation (or New Chat on Android) to start a new direct message with someone you follow, or choose New group chat / the group icon to create a group.
Create a group chat
- Choose New group chat (web: + menu → New group chat; Android: Users icon on the chat list).
- Enter a group name.
- Select at least two people you follow (three people total including you).
- Tap Create group.
Everyone in the group can send messages and see the full history. Group creators start as admins.
In a chat
You can send:
- Text messages.
- Image, Video, or generic File attachments via the attach menu.
- Emoji, GIFs, and stickers from the in-app picker (smile icon in the composer). GIF and sticker search is powered by GIPHY.
- Voice messages — tap the mic when the text box is empty, record, then stop to send an audio note.
- System GIF input: on Windows use Win + . and pick a GIF (paste into the message box); on Android use your keyboard’s GIF picker (e.g. Gboard → GIF).
You can also:
- Reply to a message (quote strip above the composer; the bubble shows who you replied to).
- Delete your own message.
- Report a message that breaks the rules. See Reporting.
- See online / last seen indicators in direct messages.
- See typing… when the other person is composing a message (direct messages and groups).
- See sent and read checkmarks on your own messages in direct chats (delivered when the server receives them, read when the other person opens the thread).
- Open conversation info to see the type (Direct Message or Group Chat), participants, and message count.
- Delete a direct conversation, or report any conversation.
Chats open quickly: the app shows recent messages from cache while fresh history loads in the background. Scroll up in a long thread to load older messages.
Group settings (admins and members)
Open Group settings from the conversation header (web or Android):
- View members and see who is an admin.
- Rename the group or change the group photo (admins only).
- Add members from people you follow (admins only).
- Remove members or promote/demote admins (admins only).
- Leave group (any member).
- Delete group for everyone (admins only).
When members join, leave, or settings change, the chat shows a system message (for example, “Alex added Jordan” or “Weekend Crew renamed to Study Group”).
Unread badges
When someone sends a new message in a group or DM, other members see an unread count on that conversation in the list. Opening the conversation marks it as read.
Message limits
Human chat is unlimited on all plans.
AI character messages have daily quotas on the free plan; paid plans increase or remove those limits — see Subscriptions.
What is not in chat (yet)
Chat does not currently support message reactions or voice/video calls in the shipped apps. If those land, this page will be updated.
