Push notifications not working (iOS)

Get push notifications to arrive reliably on iPhone and iPad.

If iOS push notifications from Public aren't arriving, work through these checks.

1. Check permission

Public needs the Notifications permission. It asks during the last step of first-run onboarding.

  1. Open Public → Settings.
  2. Turn Push notifications on.
  3. Tap Open iOS notification settings if the system switch is off.

Or open iOS Settings → Public → Notifications and allow Allow Notifications.

If you previously denied the permission, you'll need to enable it in iOS Settings — Public can't ask again until you do.

2. Make sure you're signed in

Push notifications only work when you're signed in in the app. If you signed out, sign back in and reopen the Home tab so the app re-registers your device.

3. Update the app

Older builds may not register their push token correctly. Update Public — see Update the app.

4. Focus and Do Not Disturb

If Focus, Do Not Disturb, or Sleep is on, notifications may be silenced even though they arrive. Check iOS Settings → Focus.

5. Reinstall as a last resort

If everything above is correct and pushes still don't arrive:

  1. Sign out from inside Public (Settings → Sign out).
  2. Uninstall the app.
  3. Reinstall Public from the App Store (search for Public, bundle ID in.publicapp.ios).
  4. Sign back in and grant the Notifications permission when asked.

What pushes look like

Tapping a push opens the matching screen — for example, a new message opens that conversation. See Notifications.
