Getting started
Install the Android app
Download and update Public from the Google Play Store.
Install from Google Play
Public is on Google Play under the package name in.publicapp.android.
Install Public from Google Play
On your phone or tablet
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Public (by Amitesh Kumar) or open the link above.
- Tap Install, then Open.
Stay up to date
Public ships in-app update prompts:
- Optional updates show a small Update available card you can install in the background, then restart when prompted.
- Required updates appear when your version is below the minimum supported one. You won't be able to keep using the app until you update.
You can also enable auto-update for Public in the Play Store so you always have the latest version.
For more on update behavior, see Android in-app updates and the Update the app troubleshooting article.
Permissions
Public only asks for permissions when it needs them:
- Notifications — on Android 13 and newer, asked the first time you open the app.
- Camera — only when you take a photo or video directly from the post composer.
See Android permissions for the full list.
