In-app updates
How Public prompts you to update on Android — optional and required.
Public for Android uses Google Play in-app updates, so you don't have to leave the app to install a new version.
Optional update
When a newer version is available but the one you have is still supported, you'll see a card titled Update available. You can:
- Tap Update — the new version downloads in the background. When it's ready, you'll see Update downloaded. Restarting… and the app restarts on the new version.
- Tap Later — keep using your current version. You'll be reminded again later.
Optional updates are flexible — you can keep using the app while it downloads.
Required update
If your installed version is below the minimum supported version, an immediate update is started: Google Play takes over to install the new version before you can use the app again. There's no Later option.
If the install fails, you can also update from the Play Store directly:
When updates fail
If the in-app update can't start, Public shows Could not start in-app update… and falls back to opening the Play Store.
For step-by-step troubleshooting, see Update the app.
Auto-update
You can also enable auto-update in the Play Store so Public always installs the newest version without prompting.
- Open Play Store.
- Find Public and open its listing.
- Tap the menu (⋮) and turn on Enable auto-update.
App version
Your current version is shown in the footer of the Menu tab as Public App vX.Y.Z.
